Hi,

Just a little clarification on the proposed changes to the eled/sped program.  When the program changes are approved, ELED/SPED majors will have a choice of either ELED/K-8 SPED or ELED/K-12 SPED.  The elementary portion of the composite major will remain the same for both choices.

SPECIAL NOTE:  The program has NOT been approved yet.  Program changes involve a long process starting with approval within the College of Education, then the DSU Curriculum Committee, on to DSU administration...then it goes off campus for approval at the Academic Vice Presidents Council, the Council of Presidents, and finally to the Board of Regents.  We will make an announcement once we receive notification from the BOR.

I was at the Teacher Job Fair last week with the spring student teachers looking for jobs for next year.  I talked to several administrators and recruiters.  Samantha is correct; they are inundated with elementary education applicants and look for something to make an applicant stand out.  Over and over I heard that anyone with special education is of interest to them, even though they are hiring elementary teachers.  The special education background is so helpful in the classroom.  Something to keep in mind.

If you are not presently an ELED/SPED major, but would like to talk about the possibilities, please contact me.  I'd be happy to visit with you about the program requirements and answer your questions.

Let me know if you have questions regarding the proposed changes to the eled/sped program.  We are excited about the possibilities and anxiously await the Board of Regents decision.

Thank you.

Last Meeting of the Year!!!!

We will be donating $200 to CCHS

From the last budget meeting we are expecting to receive $675 next school year to help fund our activities.  A special thanks to Kayla for really helping us out with this!

Please note that all officers next year will be the same officers we had for this school year, but to remain in their position, all officers must attend at least 3 meetings/activities a semester and be involved

Prizes were awarded at today’s meeting to all of the people who have been most active in CEC for this last school year.  Congrats to everyone awarded and a special thanks for their hard work!

Here are some of the events we have planned for next year

CCHS Nights-2 per semester

Haunted house

Dr Seuss Night

Tutoring-possibly going to try to create a rotation so members will only need to participate once or twice a month, rather than once or twice a week

Adopt a classroom at St. Thomas Elementary-pick a class and go once a month to spend a half hour-hour with the class and do an activity, read to them etc-great hands on classroom experience!

Prizes and recognition for members who are most active will also be awarded next year

To help get our organization recognized, we will also be making CEC posters, giving out brochures/prizes/etc at the activity fair, and possibly talking to GS 100 classes

Mall walk

Autism walk-water booth-work with CCHS and may be able to walk in the event-mid-October?

If you have any other ideas, please email Sam

Fundraisers

Our money should be 60% fundraising-this includes membership dues, so we should be ok with that

Next year we will be hosting our Pizza ranch fundraisers-1 or 2 a semester- all we have to do is come eat at pizza ranch and we will receive a portion of the profit made that night

Pampered chef party/fundraiser-Invite the Emry residents?-Avon or Mary Kay-if you have any more to add to these ideas or if you have any ideas that are not already listed, please email or talk to Sam

State meeting is in Sioux falls next year!

March 26-28 (not during spring break)

We plan on taking as many people as possible

This meeting will be hosted in the Downtown Holiday Inn

This is great for your resume!

Next year membership

Only $30 to me a state member of CEC if you complete the registration by the deadline (will be posted early fall semester) CEC will pay for $35 of your  $65 membership dues

National CEC Meeting

Please consider attending if you can make the commitment

National  CEC is in Seattle Washington

If you are considering in participating in the National CEC conference, you will need to plan the logic such as the airline tickets, hotel stays, etc

Its been 4-5 years since we have had any participants!!

We are encouraged to consider sponsoring 2-4 of our members to go so it is DSU CEC can help more with the cost of the trip

Dr. Ursula Garrett is now the state president of CEC

Look at website for updates with activities and future plans

Another thing to consider

DSU NOT will be changing its Elementary Education Major, but it will be changing the SPED specialization from k-8 to k-12 next year.  If you plan to change your catalog year to be k-12, it require you to do more student teaching.  Some classes may also change along with this program.  This is a great move for DSU because it opens up more for field experience options with the use of middle school and high school.  Just a reminder that if you are not already an ELED/SPED major, you may want to consider adding the SPED because many school administrations will definitely look for that going through hundreds of job applications.

Local members are also strongly encouraged to become members.

Again thank you all for your participation and good luck with finals!

WAYS TO MARKET

Activity Fair in the Fall- I don’t know what we’ve done in the past, but we should market ourselves more, make ourselves more visible for Education majors.    We should give away free stuff to help us get noticed.  Does anyone remember things they got from the activity fair? Like little bottles of Tabasco sauce or guitar key chains from Wells Fargo?

*Posters around campus

*Can anyone think of any other ways to market our club?

Challenge for everyone- could you ask one person you know in Education (preferably ELED or ELED/SPED) if they know what CEC is? If they do, great, if not, try to tell them what we’re about.  Even if they are not interested in joining, it gets our club noticed.  We don’t have that visibility that some other clubs do, because many of our activities are off campus.  If you do this (just one) you will get attendance points for one meeting)

*Remember, at the end of the year, we give away prizes for the people who went to the most meetings.
*Any Ideas for prizes for the members who did the most?

Budget Meeting- we currently have approximately $1200 in our off campus account.  Some of that was spent on Dr. Suess Night, but there is still a lot there.  How can we spend this money?  Kayla and I have a budget meeting soon, which will determine how much money we get for next year.

8.  All Ed majors can join CEC!

9.  Final Meeting at the end of April- May is too hectic with finals

10. Any questions you have? Feel free to email me anytime.

*Sign up for CCHS nights

*Sign up for Dr. Suess Night If you were there, so we can keep track

*Sign up for email list if you aren’t on it.  (Or anyone else who might be interested)

*write down suggestions for future events if you think of any

*Sign up if you made a poster or game for Dr. Suess Night

*Sign up for Tutoring

(You can do just one day or the other if you can’t do both)

March 6, 2008-Minutes

Hey Everyone!  Here is the minutes for todays meeting.  If you have any questions/comments, please email me!

CEC Meeting Minutes

March 6, 2008

Meeting started at 12:15 pm in KC 122

First of all, Dr. Seuss night was a great success!!!  We had about 250+ children attend this event and we have heard some great feedback.  A big thank you to those who set up and stayed to tear down for this event, it was greatly appreciated.  We will be keeping the posters for next year’s Dr. Seuss night-they looked awesome!  The cake/cookie walk turned out perfectly!  Everything was gone by 8!  Great job to all who participated!

We will be having CCHS nights March 13 and April 10

Note:  If those nights don’t work for you, please let Sam know so we can pick new days to go for a better turnout.

If you are a new member or if you missed out this fall and would like to purchase a shirt, please let Sam know.

We will not be hosting a Pizza Ranch Fundraiser this semester since we have quite a bit of money in our account right now.  However, we may plan a Pizza Ranch night next semester.

CEC awards and scholarships are due Tomorrow March 7!  If you have not already done so, please complete and turn these in as soon as possible.

Please check out the updated website, it looks awesome!  Great job Kali!

www.cec.dsu.edu

We may start up tutor nights  for local students on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon if there is enough interest.  The tutor sessions will be from 4-5 pm.  Anyone who signs up for this activity must be accountable! If you know you can’t make it, please don’t sign up.

We are currently thinking about new activities for CEC.  If you have any ideas, please let an officer know.  Here are some that were discussed during the meeting:

Reading to children in the elementary schools.  With this activity, each member would adopt a classroom and meet with them at least once a month and read to the class.

Crystal Pauli asked about the Special Olympics and if we would be willing to start one up in Madison.  This would be huge for the DSU CEC Chapter, but we must also be aware of how big this will be.  If we do decide to start a Special Olympics in Madison, we will have to be very committed to the cause and encourage CEC members after us to keep the tradition going.

We are also thinking of better ways to market ourselves to encourage more Education members to join.  We are planning to buy prizes and/or handouts to give to students at the beginning of the year to get their attention so they will hopefully consider joining CEC.  If you know Education majors that are not in CEC or may not know what it is, please tell them about CEC and encourage them to attend a meeting to see what we are all about.

We will also be starting an incentive policy in CEC.  For example, for each new member you find you will receive a “free pass” to any meeting or event.  The member with the most participation in meetings and events will receive a prize at the end of the year.  If you have any ideas for a prize, please let an officer know or bring it up in the next meeting.

Our final meeting will be around the end of April, but we will also have another meeting between now and then to discuss CCHS nights

Dr. Tim Fiegan’s input-

Dr. Fiegan encourages students to attend CEC Conferences because they are a great experience. Our State conference will be March 16-18 in Pierre SD ( this will be held during spring break)  Next year our state conference will be held in Sioux falls, so please consider attending and participating in this event.

If a student pre-registers to attend the State conference, they will be reimbursed for the registration fee!  Additional reimbursements  for gas and hotel stays are also going to be considered in the future.

Our national conference is in Boston MA, but it may be too late to plan for it this year.  It will already be $400 a flight and will be expensive since it is such short notice.  For any students interested, this event will be held on April 2-5.  Next year we will get more notice ahead of time so any students wanting to go can make arrangements ahead of time.  Next year the national conference will be held in Salt Lake City.  It is also being considered to have a certain amount of money set aside each year to help with the cost of those members who want to go.  If there is a lot of people that want to go however, we may need to elect only a few to go so we can help more financially.

Please keep your electronic calendars updated with these future events so you can plan to attend!  These would be excellent experiences.

-

We are also considering having a live broadcast of our meetings on the website, so anyone that is not able to attend the meetings will be able to view them online.  For this, we will need a digital camera.  We are also considering broadcasting our activities and having video clips on our site.  We would like to use our website for more communication.  With these added features, we may even attract more members.  We are hoping to organize more and plan meetings/activities a year in advance so people can plan to attend things more efficiently to get a better turn-out.  We are also planning on creating our budget a year in advance too so we know how much money we have so we can know how much we can afford to spend now and how much we should save for future events.

Meeting ended at 12:50 pm
