CEC Meeting Minutes

11-19-09

December Events---Mark your calendars!

We will be putting up the Angel Tree the week after Thanksgiving.

·         Any gloves, mittens, hats, or health products (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, tooth brush, toilet paper, etc) donations will be appreciated.

·         All hat, glove, etc donations will be asked to be hung on the tree for decorations and any health products stored underneath the tree.

·          This is a school-wide event, so anyone is encouraged to donate.

·         Some professors help us out by asking their students to donate to the tree, so this is usually a very successful event.

·         In the past we have borrowed trees, but this year we plan to invest in a tree.  We are planning to by a $30 prelit tree within the next two weeks so we have the tree in the future.

·         Amber Sherman has posters for the event ready to go; if you would like any more information, please contact Amber.

December 7-Pizza Ranch Fundraiser!!

Please join us on December 7th between 5-7 pm at the Madison Pizza Ranch!

·         To participate, all you need to do is come and eat at the Pizza Ranch buffet between 5-7.  Bring your friends!!

·         We will receive 10% of the profits during this time frame.  In the past we have ranged in earnings between $100-200 from this event!

·         Kali and Kim will be working on posters for this event next week to post around campus.  Everyone is invited to come!  Bring or invite as many people as you can!

We also discussed officer elections during this meeting:

·         Tara (Treasurer) and Kim (Secretary) will stay in their current officer positions for the remainder of the school year unless either decides to step down by the December meeting.

·         Martha has been nominated as president and Tami has been nominated vice president.  If anyone would like to nominate a person for either office, please email Kali!

·         We also need a web developer!  Kali is willing to take this position if there are no other nominations

I forgot to include that elections for officers will not be official until our December meeting when we have a vote!  So if you would like to run or if you would like to nominate someone, please email Kali or me and we will make sure they are included in our upcoming election!

Also, here are some websites for possible fund raisers for the National Conference in April.  We will also be deciding on this in December so we can be ready to fund raise for the conference next semester.

In other words, CEC is an education organization that is supported by DSU to further enhance future teachers’ knowledge about the education field of study.  The DSU chapter of CEC provides its members with opportunities to not only get involved in the DSU community, but also provides members with hands-on experiences in working with children and other educators.

Side note:  We will not be having meetings Wednesdays anymore due to Kali’s lab  Please let her know if Thursdays or Mondays during the noon hour works best for you.

We will be starting up CCHS nights again soon.  Please sign up and let Kali know what days work for you.

March 3-Dr. Seuss night with SDEA.  This is our biggest event of the year!  If you would like to help at a game, with the dirt cup snacks, crafts, etc, please either sign up at the February 10th meeting or let Kali know.  Some games include:  pin the hat on the cat, ring toss, cake walk.  We also need people that are willing to face paint and dress up as the Cat in the Hat, Thing 1, and Thing 2.

March 23-We will be hosting another Pizza Ranch fundraiser night.  Last fall, we made $83.57 at this event.

Adopt a classroom will also be starting up again soon.  If you are interested in this event, please let Kali know.  To participate in this activity, you can either go as a group or go by yourself and do a short lesson with the class.  Most groups prepare a lesson for their classroom that is around 30-45 minutes.  You can do as many lessons as you can that is convenient for both you and the classroom teacher (Most groups try for either once or twice a month).  This is a great way to get classroom experience!!

Dr. Fiegen also joined our meeting online to discuss the CEC State and National Conventions that are coming up in March and April.

March 26-28 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday)  The CEC State Convention will be held in Sioux Falls.  The registration for this event is $55, but if you preregister before March 13th, this fee will be fully reimbursed to you.  If you can, please attend!  This is a great experience to see what we’re all about!  This event will be held at the downtown Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls.  More information will be provided as the event gets closer.  For more information, please talk to Ursula Garrett.  Her email is ursula.garrett@dsu.edu

April 1-4 (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday)  The CEC National Convention will take place in Seattle, WA this year.  Registration is $169 for CEC student members, meal, transportation, and hotel cost is separate.  If you are interested in this event, it may be a good idea for a group of you to go together to save on the hotel expense.  DSU CEC will help with some of the expenses.  If you are willing and able to go, this is an amazing experience!  Please go to the link below for more information.

http://www.cec.sped.org/Content/NavigationMenu/ProfessionalDevelopment/ConventionExpo/

Email from Crystal Pauli

Hi,

Just a little clarification on the proposed changes to the eled/sped program.  When the program changes are approved, ELED/SPED majors will have a choice of either ELED/K-8 SPED or ELED/K-12 SPED.  The elementary portion of the composite major will remain the same for both choices.

SPECIAL NOTE:  The program has NOT been approved yet.  Program changes involve a long process starting with approval within the College of Education, then the DSU Curriculum Committee, on to DSU administration...then it goes off campus for approval at the Academic Vice Presidents Council, the Council of Presidents, and finally to the Board of Regents.  We will make an announcement once we receive notification from the BOR.

I was at the Teacher Job Fair last week with the spring student teachers looking for jobs for next year.  I talked to several administrators and recruiters.  Samantha is correct; they are inundated with elementary education applicants and look for something to make an applicant stand out.  Over and over I heard that anyone with special education is of interest to them, even though they are hiring elementary teachers.  The special education background is so helpful in the classroom.  Something to keep in mind.

If you are not presently an ELED/SPED major, but would like to talk about the possibilities, please contact me.  I'd be happy to visit with you about the program requirements and answer your questions.

Let me know if you have questions regarding the proposed changes to the eled/sped program.  We are excited about the possibilities and anxiously await the Board of Regents decision.

Thank you.
